An emotional new film that follows an expectant father through a lifetime with his daughter has been released as research reveals it’s the smallest family moments we remember most.
Life’s Little Moments sees the dad travelling to hospital for his daughter’s birth while recording a voice note to his own father about becoming a parent.
But his mind races years ahead, taking in everything from playing games in the garden and taking her last-day-of-school photograph to teenage arguments, cooking dinner together and eventually watching her leave home.
The film comes as a study of 2,000 Brits found 85 per cent believe their strongest childhood memories were created during small, unplanned moments rather than major occasions.
And it’s those seemingly mundane experiences which feature throughout the film, with watching movies together (32 per cent), family meals (26 per cent), car journeys (16 per cent) and playing games (14 per cent) among Brits’ fondest memories.
A crab-shaped egg timer, first used by the father and daughter when cooking together, reappears as she grows older – becoming a symbol of how ordinary objects can become wrapped up in family memories.
The research found more than three-quarters (78 per cent) believe who they shared an experience with is what ultimately made it meaningful.
Technology increasingly provides a record of those moments, too, with 76 per cent saying taking photos and videos makes them appreciate simple experiences more.
That is reflected as the father proudly photographs his daughter on her final day of primary school – one of countless moments that can be over almost as soon as they arrive.
More than a quarter of Brits (28 per cent) regularly revisit their own childhood photos and videos, which most commonly bring back feelings of nostalgia (48 per cent), happiness (39 per cent) and connection (33 per cent).
