Matt Goodwin prediction comes back to haunt him following Reform drubbing in Makerfield

Aged like milk.

Matt Goodwin has been reminded of a bullish – and completely incorrect – prediction he made about the Makerfield by-election in the wake of Reform’s defeat.

Cast your mind back to February, when Goodwin was Reform’s candidate in another north-west by-election where they fancied their chances, Gorton & Denton.

On that occasion, they lost out to a resurgent Green Party and Goodwin showed himself to be the worst loser in British politics, making completely unfounded claims about family voting and promptly being dubbed Matt Badloss.

Well, clearly not content with embarrassing himself at one by-election, Goodwin has managed to do so for the second time in a matter of months.

Back in May, shortly after the by-election was announced, the GB News and hard-right academic bullishly predicted that Reform would win in Makerfield.

In a video on X, Goodwin boasted about knowing the Makerfield area and claimed that based on his experience campaigning in Gorton and Denton, he could confidently guarantee a Reform victory in Makerfield, despite the popularity of Labour’s Burnham.

Goodwin said: “Andy Burnham is going to lose Makerfield and he’s going to lose it by some way.”

He claimed Burnham is “not as popular as he thinks he is,” and that Makerfield would be an “even harder” task than Gorton and Denton, where they finished third.

Reform UK suffer ‘worst night since general election’

Goodwin pointed to Reform’s local election success in Makerfield as evidence the party would do well and claimed they would learn from Gorton and Denton and “wipe the floor with the Labour Party.”

Of course, what ended up happening was that Burnham stormed home with over half the vote in Makerfield, finishing some 9,000 votes clear of Reform’s Robert Kenyon.

Reform did worse than expected and it wasn’t them wiping the floor with Labour, but instead the other way round.

So, a few people have decided to reshare Goodwin’s disastrous prediction, providing yet further proof that he perhaps is not as much of a political genius as he thinks he is.

It's never a bad day to laugh at Matt Goodwin but today is an especially good day. https://t.co/GtNGV6KJAb
