Senior member Reform UK member Tim Montgomerie has been suspended from the party for his criticism of Zia Yusuf and Nigel Farage.

In 2024, Tim Montgomerie, the founder of ConservativeHome and ex-Boris Johnson adviser, became one of the most high-profile figures to jump ship from the Tories for Reform.

But, it seems the circus in Nigel Farage’s tent was too much for Montgomerie.

Just days after he issued some reasonable criticism of Zia Yusuf for calling ex-Tory defence secretary Ben Wallace a “traitor” in a post on social media, Montgomerie has been suspended by Reform.

Shortly after Yusuf’s comments on X last week, Montgomerie tweeted that his words were ‘not acceptable’ and he had raised concerns about Reform’s home affairs spokesperson’s behaviour with both Yusuf and Farage.

This was followed by Montgomerie criticising Farage for not choosing to attend the Clacton by-election count on Friday morning.

This is a good result for @Nigel_Farage. Very good actually and he's been the winsome happy warrior of olde on the sun-soaked streets of Clacton during the campaign. He should be on every tv screen this morning – underlining his win – and with that cheeky, trademark smile on his…

Most recently, Montgomerie had appeared on the Spectator’s Coffee House Shots podcast, when he doubled down on his criticism of Yusuf.

He told the podcast that Yusuf has “consistently freelanced on Twitter” over major Reform policies, and suggested that Farage had “fallen out of love with Zia.”

Montgomerie also called on Yusuf to be more of a “team player” in Reform.

On Tuesday, the Spectator’s deputy political editor James Heale revealed Montgomerie had had his party membership suspended by Reform after the podcast was recorded but before it was released.

Tim Montgomerie has now been suspended as a party member. The suspension occurred after this podcast was recorded but before it was posted online.

The Mirror reports that his suspension was a result of his public criticism of the party. X
