Sky Mobile has more than doubled the number of destinations covered by its roaming service, in a move that could intensify competition among UK mobile providers ahead of the summer holiday season.
The company has expanded its Roaming Passport Plus offering from 55 to 120 destinations, allowing customers to use their UK data, calls and texts abroad for £2 a day without any activation or additional setup.
The expansion covers destinations across the EU and EEA as well as long-haul hotspots including the United States, Australia and a range of countries that have traditionally attracted significantly higher roaming charges.
The move positions Sky Mobile among the most competitive major UK networks for international travel, combining one of the broadest roaming footprints in the market with a straightforward pricing structure.
While some providers continue to offer free roaming in Europe, many UK holidaymakers travelling outside the continent face a complex mix of roaming zones, passes and daily fees. Sky’s approach is designed to remove that uncertainty by applying the same £2 daily charge across a significantly expanded list of destinations.
Roaming costs
The announcement comes as new research commissioned by Sky Mobile suggests many travellers remain vulnerable to unexpected roaming costs.
According to the company’s Data Roaming Index, almost half (48 per cent) of 25 to 34-year-olds have experienced surprise roaming charges while abroad, while one in five people admit they do not know which countries are included within their mobile allowance before travelling.
The research identified online messaging, app downloads, maps and navigation services among the biggest causes of data consumption overseas. More than half of respondents said they had used navigation apps while abroad, while almost a third admitted turning on mobile data to book restaurants, excursions and activities despite potential roaming costs.
Sky said some common smartphone habits can quickly become expensive without the right roaming package. Background app activity, automatic downloads and video streaming can all generate substantial charges when travellers are outside their network’s included destinations.
Roaming Passport Plus expansion
The expansion of Roaming Passport Plus appears aimed squarely at tackling those concerns by giving customers access to their existing UK allowances in a far wider range of countries.
With international travel expected to surge during the summer months, the move could increase pressure on rival operators to simplify their own roaming propositions, particularly as consumers become increasingly sensitive to surprise charges abroad.
Roaming comparison: Major UK networks
- Sky Mobile – £2 per day roaming charge, covering 120 destinations worldwide.
- EE – Around £2.50 per day in Europe on many plans, with broad international coverage.
- Vodafone – Typically £2 to £2.42 per day depending on plan and roaming pass, with extensive worldwide coverage.
- Three UK – Uses a pass-based roaming system with a large global footprint.
- O2 – Free EU roaming on many plans (subject to fair-use limits), primarily focused on Europe.
- Smarty – No daily roaming charge in the EU, subject to a fair-use cap.
- Lebara – EU roaming included on many plans.
- giffgaff – EU roaming included, subject to usage caps.
Industry observers are likely to view Sky’s announcement as one of the most significant roaming updates from a UK provider since the reintroduction of roaming charges following Brexit, particularly because it combines relatively low pricing with one of the widest destination lists currently available.
