Forget expensive flights and packed airports – Britain’s own coastlines, lakes and historic cities could offer the next best thing.
A new poll has revealed the UK’s best “destination dupes”, with thousands of holidaymakers identifying British beauty spots that capture the feel of some of Europe’s most iconic holiday destinations.
Topping the list is Port Isaac in Cornwall, which was named Britain’s answer to Italy’s Amalfi Coast thanks to its dramatic cliffside setting, turquoise coves, pastel cottages and winding coastal roads.
The research, commissioned by Travelodge, surveyed 10,000 UK adults and reflects a growing trend among travellers looking for destinations that recreate the charm of overseas hotspots without the cost or hassle of flying abroad.
Almost half (44 per cent) of respondents said they had swapped an overseas holiday for a UK break over the past 12 months, while an overwhelming 94 per cent said they would consider holidaying in Britain if it offered scenery comparable to a famous European destination.
The findings also highlight why more people are embracing the so-called “destination dupe” trend. More than half (56 per cent) said rising travel costs have made them less likely to holiday abroad, while airport queues (70 per cent), flight delays and cancellations (61 per cent) and overcrowded tourist hotspots (40 per cent) were also among the biggest deterrents.

- Cambridge – Venice, Italy
- St Davids, Pembrokeshire – Dubrovnik, Croatia
- Staithes, North Yorkshire – Positano, Italy
- Canterbury – Bruges, Belgium
When choosing a destination dupe, value for money (61 per cent), accommodation (59 per cent) and scenery (52 per cent) ranked as the most important considerations for holidaymakers, ahead of ease of travel and things to do.
Seaside destinations were also found to be Britain’s favourite type of getaway, with 37 per cent choosing the coast over city breaks, countryside retreats and mountain escapes.
