Every summer, thousands of travellers descend on Cinque Terre in search of colourful harbours, seafood restaurants and postcard-perfect coastal views. But just along the Italian Riviera lies a fishing village that offers much of the same charm – without the crowds.
Often overlooked in favour of its famous neighbours, Camogli is one of Liguria’s best-kept secrets. With its pastel-painted waterfront, authentic fishing heritage and laid-back atmosphere, it’s the kind of place that rewards travellers looking to experience a more traditional side of the Italian Riviera.
Interest in the region continues to grow, with online searches for “Italian Riviera towns” soaring in recent weeks, but according to travel experts, Camogli remains one of the coastline’s most underrated destinations.
Heather Green, Head of Product at Citalia, says: “Camogli is one of Liguria’s hidden gems. It’s a traditional fishing village where legend says the fishermen’s wives would wait by the shore each evening, and as darkness fell, the town would light up to guide the fishermen safely home. It feels incredibly romantic at night.”
Unlike the bustling villages of Cinque Terre, Camogli has retained much of its local character. Fishing boats still line the pebble beach, family-run seafood restaurants serve the day’s catch, and colourful buildings rise steeply from the waterfront in classic Riviera style.
One of the town’s most enduring stories adds to its appeal. Local legend says fishermen’s wives would gather along the shoreline after sunset, lighting lamps to help guide their husbands safely back to the harbour. Whether fact or folklore, it has become part of the village’s enduring romantic identity.
Visitors can spend the day wandering the narrow lanes of the old town, relaxing on the beach or enjoying fresh Ligurian seafood while watching boats bob in the harbour. It’s also home to the medieval Dragonara Castle, which overlooks the sea, and the striking Basilica di Santa Maria Assunta, whose colourful interior reflects the town’s maritime heritage.
While Cinque Terre undoubtedly deserves its reputation, Camogli offers something increasingly rare on one of Italy’s most popular coastlines: the chance to experience Riviera life at a slower pace.
Its relaxed atmosphere, authentic charm and easy rail links from Genoa make it an ideal day trip or overnight stay for travellers wanting to escape the busiest tourist hotspots while still enjoying the colourful beauty the Italian Riviera is famous for.
