Laila Cunningham squirms as she’s asked to explain Farage’s secret £5m

Laila Cunningham has become the latest Reform UK left squirming in an interview after being asked for answers about Nigel Farage’s £5m gift.

Now that Farage has secured his return to parliament after successfully beating a man with a bin on his head, the parliamentary investigation into him can continue.

On Friday, the standards watchdog confirmed it has reopened its investigation into Farage. The investigation is looking into whether he should have declared a £5m sum from Thai-based crypto billionaire Christopher Harborne, which he received just months before becoming an MP.

With the investigation active again, Reform can expect a few more questions about the mysterious money and the conflicting messages about why Farage received it.

Over the weekend, it was Laila Cunningham’s turn to be grilled over her leader’s finances.

During an appearance on LBC, Reform’s candidate for the London mayoral election was asked what the latest explanation from her party was for why Farage took the money.

After Cunningham parroted Farage’s claim he was given the fee to pay for private security, LBC’s Ben Kentish pointed out Farage had also said it was a reward for his Brexit campaigning.

Cunningham claimed that both these explanations can be true at the same time, prompting Kentish to clarify whether the money had actually been spent on security.

Farage has never clarified whether this is the case, and Cunningham pleaded ignorance on the matter as well, saying she had “no idea” what the Clacton MP had spent the £5m on.

“Isn’t it strange to take a donation to make yourself safer and not spent it on making yourself safer,” Kentish asked.

Cunningham replied: “I don’t know what he spent it on, that I can’t comment on.”

Kentish then pointed out that, whilst it is perhaps understandable for other people to not know what Farage spends his money on, it is bizarre that Farage himself has refused to.

“I think in his mind, and don’t take this the wrong way, it’s really none of people’s business how he spends his own private money,” Cunningham retorted.
