The Democrats are backed to win control of both chambers of Congress at this week’s crucial midterms, according to the bookies.

On Tuesday, millions of Americans will go to the polls in the midterm elections to decide which party controls the House of Representatives and the Senate.

All 435 seats in the House are up for election whilst 35 of the 100 Senate seats are up for grabs.

At the moment, both are controlled by the Republicans. But should the Democrats manage to flip either or both, it will put the brakes on Donald Trump’s presidency.

And, on the eve of the elections, the bookies reckon a blue wave is going to sweep over Congress.

The Democrats are heavy favourites to win control of the House at 1/33 with the Republicans at 11/1.

The Senate is set to be a closer battle, according to Star Sports, but the Democrats are still favourites.

The odds of the Senate flipping blue are 3/10 whilst it’s 12/5 for the Republicans to keep control of the upper chamber.

This means the odds of the Democrats completing a midterms sweep and winning control of both arms of Congress are 1/3, a 75% chance.

Russell Bardon, a spokesperson for Star Sports, said: “Tuesday’s midterm elections could see a pivotal moment in US politics with the Democrats being backed into 1/3 to win both the House of Representatives and the Senate, which would represent a complete shift in the balance of power away from the Republican party.

“The money suggests that the blue side of Congress are in the ascendency and it’s 9/4 that they secure a huge majority in the House with over 250 seats, while they are just 3/10 to win control of the Senate.

“The betting suggests Donald Trump’s party have it all to do to maintain control of both chambers of Congress and our customers are anticipating they could suffer a significant loss in the Senate, with the Republicans backed into even-money (from 13/10) to win 47 or fewer seats – someway short of their current total of 53.”
