Nigel Farage ‘may soon have to answer to the FCA’ over £5m crypto donation

Labour Chair Anna Turley is asking some pretty awkward questions - ones which could land Nigel Farage in more trouble.

Dear me. You accept one opaque multi-million pound donation from a crypto billionaire without declaring it properly, and you never hear the end of it. Nigel Farage has encountered the harsh reality of scrutiny in recent months – all stemming from one significant handout.

Labour Chair asks FCA to investigate Reform crypto donations

Christopher Harborne lined the Reform’s leaders pockets with a cool £5 million back in 2024, just weeks before Mr. Farage declared his intention to run for Parliament as the MP for Clacton. At the seventh attempt, the chief Brexiteer finally sealed his seat in Westminster.

Reform have been riding high in the polls for a while – but support for the party appears to be waning. Farage himself has had to bat away several scandals, ranging from his relationship with Nathan Gill, to accusations of racism and antisemitism while he was a student.

Nigel Farage wobbles in the polls, as scrutiny over donations increases

However, the controversy surrounding his massive payday has arguably been the most damaging. New opinion polls show Labour gaining nine points on the turquoise rosettes, and a Burnham-led party also outperforms a Farage-led one, as per More In Common.

It’s certainly a pain-point for the former UKIP leader. And, as temperatures continue to soar, it’s Nigel who is feeling the heat more than most. Anna Turley, who serves as the Labour Party Chair, wrote to the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) this week, urging them to investigate Mr. Farage.

What has Anna Turley asked the FCA to investigate?

Turley has raised concerns about the relationship between Reform’s crypto funding, and the 61-year-old’s apparent commitment to opposing stablecoin regulation. Farage had previously told LBC that he was meeting with the Bank of England to set out his case, and it has set alarm bells ringing.

The Labour Chair wants the FCA to determine if Farage’s advocacy for the cryptocurrency of Tether has, in anyway shape or form, benefitted Harborne, stating that he has attempted to use his position of power ‘to benefit those’ who have supported him financially.

“Mr Farage’s public advocacy for stablecoins and cryptoassets raises issues within the FCA’s remit. He has publicly praised the stablecoin Tether, attacked measures that could limit the growth of private stablecoins, and argued that the United Kingdom should become a global centre for cryptoasset activity.”

“At the same time, he and his political party are both being funded directly by people with financial interests in cryptocurrencies. I therefore urge you to investigate Nigel Farage’s apparent efforts to use his public role to benefit those who have contributed to him financially.” | Anna Turley
