A massive fortnight of global democratic expression kicked off on Sunday – and it’s off to a bad start for Vladimir Putin and one of his closest allies in Europe. The Serbian Election results were declared this evening, and the incumbent Aleksandar Vučić has been dramatically ousted from power.

Huge week of elections starts with a blow for Vladimir Putin

With the votes also being tallied in Brazil tonight, the left-wing Lula is facing a battle to retain his premiership against the of former president Jair Bolsonaro. Benjamin Netanyahu is also scrapping to retain control of Israel, with ballots opening on Tuesday. The US Midterms then following a week later.

In Serbia, the snap election has been won by Student List, a protest movement formed in 2025 which ran on an anti-corruption ticket, vowing to reform the balance of power within the country. On Sunday night, it was Vučić himself who threw the towel in, officially conceding the contest in a public address.

The victory does indeed present as decisive. Projections show Student List are likely to claim between 135 to 140 seats, clearing the bar of 126 required to form a majority government. They are forecast to end with 52% of public support – roughly 13 percentage points ahead of the ruling SNS Party.

After more than a decade in power, the outgoing president will now make way for the opposition. It’s certainly a hammer blow for the Kremlin, and earlier this month, Putin threw his weight behind Vučić and his party – stating that he would like to see him continue in the role.

Will the Serbian Election results set alarm bells ringing in the Kremlin?

That went well. But just how will this change Serbia’s relationship with Russia? Though Student List have not campaigned on an anti-Russian slate, Vučić and his supporters believe that their opponents will look to ‘impose sanctions on Moscow’ within the next six months.

Aleksandar Vučić has long aligned his country with Russia, backing them in various diplomatic fields and refusing to cooperate with sanctions placed on the rogue nation – defying EU instructions in the process. But, after losing Orban in Hungary earlier this year, Putin is running out of friends on the continent.

Serbia’s student-backed Student List has won a parliamentary majority with 52.1% of the vote and about 138 of 250 seats, according to a CeSID projection, ending more than a decade of dominance by Aleksandar Vučić.
